2019 Swinburne Students Solve OTs

Each year Solve Disability Solutions partners with universities across Victoria to transfer assistive technology expertise to an emerging workforce of aspiring engineers and allied health professionals. Working with academics and department heads at some of Victoria’s most prominent universities, Solve’s unique (clinical–technical) business model and clinical process is now fittingly embedded in course curriculum. Solve occupational therapists (OT) support students to enhance knowledge and spark engagement through the delivery of interactive presentations, project co-design opportunities, and core OT skill development and training. Students majoring in occupational therapy, biomedical engineering, mechanical and mechatronics receive invaluable exposure to front-line therapists and real-life cases.

Students from Swinburne University of Technology, RMIT University, and Deakin University are offered regular opportunities to work with Solve volunteers and clients to co-design, innovate and optimise new iterations of previously delivered technologies. Solve also offers two student occupational therapy placements each year – where students receive first-hand experience working with the Solve team in a close, collaborative environment, to learn from and engage with people with disability, participate in the delivery of specialised therapy services, and prescribing quality, cost-effective and innovative AT solutions.

Navigating therapeutic practice and the NDIS

In the midst of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) rollout, current students are embracing the opportunity to apply their clinical reasoning and technical NDIS knowledge in a ‘real world’ context at Solve. Students are adding to their course outlines and participating in the economic and business side of the new and ever-changing national managed market for disability services in Australia. This has proven to be an invaluable opportunity for all involved to collaborate and share up-to-date knowledge of the NDIS; something most practicing therapists are still trying to get their heads around.

A voice for disability and assistive technology

In 2018, Solve Occupational Therapist, Liz Doyle was appointed Clinical Associate to Swinburne University’s School of Health Sciences, providing occupational therapy students with supervision, expertise, and mentorship in their final year of study. In November 2018, she presented to the Australian Rehabilitation & Assistive Technology Association (ARATA) conference in Melbourne, on Disruptive, human centred design with a skilled open source community with Dr. Anthony Lowe (TAD). Her latest work – writing a consumer-focused e-book on AT, in collaboration with Occupational Therapy Australia.
